Diaz Wedding

The 1940s was full of class and fashion to die for. The Diaz wedding that took place this winter embodied that very image. The bridesmaids were fitted in a calved length 40s black gown and cute bright red wedges. The groomsmen took the traditional suits and added a red tie to match the ladies. Guests arrived in their best 40s design. WWII soldiers ushered people to their seats, and 40s gangsters provided the mood music; however, outshining the red accents of this black and white wedding, were the smiles of both the bride and the groom. As soon as she walked down the stairway of the amphitheater, a bright smiled formed on the grooms face. As the bride came closer, tears formed in his eyes. It was a precious moment to see them not only exchange smiles, but also vows that will hold through their lifetime. I was honored to capture this life changing day for the Diaz's and I wish them all the best!

We love Costco like most people, the samples, the enormous packs of TP, the $1.50 dog and pop. But would we buy our wedding dress from Costco? Knowing the frugal gals that we are, we just might! Hey if the dress is right and the price even better, we're pretty sure our groom doesn't give a hoot if it was purchased in a stuffy boutique or a wholesale warehouse - as long as we're happy, he's happy.

As I watch my twitterfeed, it's amazing how in the midst of personal drabble, updates from celebrities, and other non important updates - CNN reminds me of the devastation a world away. Pictures stop my heart and I'm reminded how it could be us. That the baby found alive and reunited with her family is only one out of many not saved and it could be my own. That the grandparents who passed away when being transported from their nursing home could be my own. As tragedies ravage other countries, the reminder is that America is not safe in a bubble. If it were my family, who would help us?

Prayer. Finances. Moral support. May we reach out to those who have lost so much.

Bob and Natasha

We are started Bob and Natasha's engagement session at the Custom Hotel in Westchester, CA before heading down to Toes Beach in Playa Vista. The Custom Hotel provided a modern version of timeless class - much like themselves. Bob stayed classy with basic button down shirt and sweater (losing the sweater at the beach, for a more casual look), and Natasha dressed to compliment with a silk dress and later a silk and lace top.

After a couple of shots a the Custom's Bar and Lounge that over looks the pool, we took off our shoes and had a bit of real So Cal fun. The weather was perfect. Blue skies and blue-green ocean provided the ideal backdrop for these two. We practiced the "Wedding Dip," snapped their smiles and kisses, and let them enjoy the view while hoping to catch the romance. We can't wait for June 25th, so we can capture the when the new chapter for their life together officially starts.

Wedding Wednesday: Trash the Dress Photo Shoot

I'm pretty sure that just the phrase "trash the dress" causes some brides to shudder. Not to fear, it's not as gruesome as it sounds!! It is quite possible to do a Trash the Dress session where a good dry cleaning will restore your dress to same state as when you danced the night away with your groom. This type of session allows you to wear your dress again, kiss your spouse all session long and have some more stylized photos to add to your collection. Since it's after your wedding day, you'll be a little more relaxed and be able to enjoy the session for what it is: a date with your husband or wife. :)

Maternity Photos

While I am more comfortable behind the camera rather than in front of it, I have always loved documenting life. My film camera in jr high, my canon powershot in high school and my iPhone today, I always have a camera in my purse to capture the moment.

So when we found out we were expecting there was no doubt in my mind that we would take the time to do maternity photos to remember this precious time in our lives. Lindsay took us to a nearby park (where my husband proposed actually!) on Thanksgiving day to do some portraits. I had an elaborate photo story to tell but some of us (ahem husband) got tired of doing photos very quickly so we'll see if those actually happen ;)

When it comes to favors, I have nothing against candy coated almonds in tulle. In fact, I love eating the candy coating, not a big fan of the almonds though. But sometimes, you want something a little more fun and memorable for your guests to take home. A tangible memory of their presence at your wedding.

A few months ago we hired Lefty Joe to do caricatures at a birthday party we hosted. He was a hit! It was nice to send everyone home with a favor that was also entertainment! There was quite a crowd watching the artist depict their friends.

We will be the first to admit that when it comes to DJs, we're REALLY picky, like really. To us, the perfect DJ keeps the dance floor packed and moving but isn't such a ham that you're constantly being distracted by their weird jokes.

Steven was that ideal dj. The tag team style allowed for a seamless evening with no awkward gaps between songs. They started off with a ton of oldies but goodies that got the young and old on the floor (now that's a feat!) Being a guest at this wedding, Lindsay can attest that the music was stellar - I (Lauren) had to hear about her aching abs for several days after.

Eddie & Francesca {e-session}

My favorite moment? When we asked if they would mind doing a piggy back shot, and she said "Can we really??" :D

Turns out, Eddie is usually wearing his piece and she never gets a piggy back ride. Even though both of their jobs require them to be tough, this was one of the sweetest engagement sessions EVER. Francesca & Eddie can bring out the FIERCE - but they also know how to be silly ;)

Francesca & Eddie wanted to do their session at the beautiful Terranea Resort. We had to schedule and reschedule and reschedule again because for once Southern California weather was just not cooperating. But finally we had the perfect afternoon.

As we drove for what seemed like miles and miles, we finally arrived at the Mission Inn in Riverside. It was then that we finally realized the beauty that had captured Sonia's heart and imagination. The perfect setting for two people in love.

As we rode the tiny tiny elevator to the top floor, Julio's eyes were bright with excitement about the amazing room they had been given. I couldn't imagine a more romantic place to spend your first night of the rest of your lives.

Saturday morning

Last Saturday we met up early, early for a Saturday not filled with working that is. We went down to Urth Cafe for delicious breakfast foods and coffee (although my pregnant self really just wanted a bagel, cream cheese and one of their amazing chocolate shakes).

They seated us outside, under the warm november California sun. It was crowded but not too crowded.

We went over dates, clients and times and then we just talked. Catching up on things that had nothing to do with lenses, contracts or portraits. It was brilliant :)

Today I'm thankful for the blessing of family.

Lindsay's Holiday Wish List with the One I Love:

So I am really into the next coming holidays. Not the creepy-run-up-your-electricity-bill into, but I like the warm fuzzy feelings that holidays can bring, but only if you do them right and with the ones you love. So here I have comprised a list of all the things I want do from now till about the end of December to get me in the mood sort-to-speak.

1. Carve a pumpkin
2. Go to Disneyland to see the decorations for both fall and winter (would like to also see the World of Color and the Snow).
3. Go Christmas shopping and before a stop at Starbucks to purchase a holiday drink in the holiday cups.
4. Go to the Grove/Farmer's Marker for an evening out to dinner and to also see the decorations for Christmas and the huge tree.
5. Go to Newport Beach to see Christmas lights.
6. Eat pop corn, drink hot chocolate and watch our favorite Christmas movies.
7. Go Christmas Caroling.
8. Build a gingerbread house.
9. Go ice skating outdoors in either down town L.A. or Santa Monica.
10. Have a Snow day.

:) Just thinking about this list makes me feel good. Needless to say, I have finally given up on my tan and I am excited for peacoats, pumpkin spice lattes, Christmas songs and New Year's kisses.

Mike & Danielle's wedding was a day full of their love for one another. Ever since their engagement session, we knew we would love their wedding. Danielle got ready at the beautiful Ayres hotel, her room full of friends, loved ones, and last minute preparations. As Mike and his groomsmen arrived, she prepped for the first look.

She knew right away that she wanted to capture this moment on the big staircase at the front doors. What little girl doesn't imagine walking down a huge staircase to meet her prince? :)

Their day was full of precious moments: anxiously reviewing their vows, sneaking away for rooftop portraits, and lots and lots of dancing.

This is an all inclusive package which includes a maternity session capturing those precious moments before your little one is born, a first look session where we spend a few moments as soon as possible with you and the baby for announcements and then finally a newborn session with props and those cute little outfits you've been saving for baby. We love newborn sessions, there's something so precious about those first few weeks as they change so quickly!

All of our sessions can be done a la carte and gift certificates are available for showers or other special occasions.

A year ago we were just beginning to put feet to a dream.

In May of 2009 we were invited to attend several local fashion shows in down town Los Angeles. From the minute our feet hit the floor with our cameras, we were smitten. The lights, the runway, the beautiful faces and powdered brushes, we loved being in the middle of the action. We began to dream about taking what we loved, photography, and doing it more often and developing a craft. The next few months were spent shooting shooting shooting! When we weren't running around with our favorite upcoming models, stylists, make up artists and hair stylists, we were putting in time learning what it means to own your own business. From classes at the local college, to standing in line to get our business license, we embarked in this adventure wanting to do it right.

I (Lauren) began following some photographer's blogs when began planning my wedding in 2007. I found myself checking their blogs daily looking for new updates, and always thinking, "If I could do anything..." When these doors began to open for us last year, I started thinking "Why I can't I?" I didn't realize it, but these past three years of following other photographer's blogs has really began to develop in me what kind of photography I like the most and am drawn to. I know that my style and creative preferences will continue to evolve through the years, but have several influences to thank for not only direction but inspiration to even try this in the first place.

We'd like to thank our brides of 2009 and 2010 who put their faith in us early on, allowing us to capture one of the most important moments of their lives. We have been blessed to work with some really amazing couples, whose love inspires us. We also have met some very talented artists, models, stylists and vendors. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to grow & learn. Thank you to Jamie - who has not only encouraged us from day one, but practically forced us to value our work & spent hours upon hours helping us develop truly respectable packages that we can offer our clients.

This summer has been full - full of work but also play. Here's a peek into what we've been up to :)

Lauren:

Our first adventure this summer was a trip to Las Vegas. I can sum it up in one word HOTfun.

We also were blessed with a trip to Kauai, HI. It was one of the most amazing trips full of relaxation, beauty and quality time together.

I brought a low quality underwater digital camera. It would only allow a certain amount of exposures and it was frustrating and exciting to use a camera with no immediate gratification of viewing the image and wondering out the photos would turn out :)

But the biggest news of the summer for us is that J and I are expecting! We are so excited to welcome our own little bundle into the world in February :)

My summer was a cloudy one, and if you live in Southern California, you know what I mean; however, it goes without saying that this summer was an adventure - concert hopping for TwilightMOMS.net, photography adventures, cinema in the cemetery and journeys through the hollywood hills and downtown Los Angeles. I took this summer and tried to take time off from the "art of editing" and in its stead shoot more "raw" photos. It was a fun experiment that reminded me how much I love black and white, and God's natural colors.

On the few days that there was sun

we all made it to the beach. We sunk

deep into the sand, and enjoyed the nature that God had given us.

I am a very emotionally invested person. When I read a book for example, I don't just pass over the pages limiting myself to translating what each word means, but I try to place myself in that very moment the character is living. This same idea goes for everything: music, circumstances, movies, other people's stories, and yes, even photographs.

This photograph is one that I am emotionally invested in. After spending the morning with Tavitian's, this picture spoke more than a thousand words. I will never forget when we were just shooting the bride and he was mimicking her every "model" move - a hand to a pouted hip. Of course, she could not help, but laugh. Where we shared in the love that each had for one another. Throughout our day together we witnessed little glances, kisses, laughs and playful gestures. Moments like these were tiny glimpses into their lives. So by the end of our day, the hair on our arms' raised as he embraced her in the water for the last kiss. This was to be their last frame of the day.

Araceli: Sweet Love

There are moments during the wedding day which kind of stick in my mind,

snapshots of the day which I captured with my camera but are made memorable by being there and experiencing it.

Like Rob's heartfelt toast or Mike's dedication of "Shots". I love these moments.

Araceli's videographer asked her to record a special message for her soon to be husband.

I could tell Araceli was a little nervous, but as she spoke, her love shone through.

I found myself tearing up, even though I only caught a few of the words (my high school spanish class was a long time ago....),

I could see and hear the emotion and love she felt for this man.

I love these moments.

One of our favorite local cafes has got to be the Coffee Connection in Venice, CA. The Coffee Connection is one of the Westside's best kept secrets. We were excited when they asked us to update their promotional photos for their website.

Not only does their fair trade espresso have a smooth delicious flavor, but the mexican chocolate drinks are AH-mazing. The cafe has a cute outdoor patio if you like to do your studying under the warm California sun - even though that's been MIA the past few weeks. And no corner cafe is complete with out free WIFI.

Mejia Reception

Weddings often are bundled up in things like the limo running late, the flower girl's hair not finished, or someone forgetting to pick the cake and what feels like moments the day is over. Maybe all you remembered is what went wrong, and the very first kiss you had as husband and wife. Even though most wedding come and go in a fury, the Mejia reception was a very different story from the rest.

Their reception (and wedding as well!) was located in a ranch style house in inland Los Angeles. In the back yard the pool was in between an open bar that had the feel of a roofless rustic tavern and an lush green catering to long tables that held floral arrangements and antique ware. In the center of the long table was a dance floor that would be proved very useful at the end of the night.

The bride had chosen a deep purple as the main color, which off set the rustic earthy feel of this beautiful backyard. Sunflower mixed arrangements seem to burst of the tables, and the white pom poms that hung above added the romantic soft touch that every wedding seeks.

The party was not that big - enough to fill the huge back yard, but small enough to feel the intimacy of family and close friends. Underneath the small lights that hung above the dance floor and around the whole backyard you could sense the ease at which people were enjoying themselves. Laughter filled the skies, and there were plenty of embraces going throughout the night.

After we had taken our shots of cutting the cake, the first dance, and all the other traditions that come with weddings we stayed for a moment or two to catch a bit of history of our couple. As the sun was nearly down, a story unfolded of this beautiful couple. A film comprised of favorite songs and pictures was played and we got a glimpse at what led them up to this moment. Everyone stopped what they were doing, cheered for the photos with kisses, laughed at them as children, and cried at tender moments captured. It made me realize that the Mejia's planned a day were it was not a rushed day that only glimpses of it will be remembered, but a special day were it was spent with ones they love and who love them.

Senior Rep 2010: Shannon

After we did our fun session with Shannon and her pup, we asked her if she will be our Senior Representative for the Class of 2011. She said yes! What this means is Shannon received a fun pre-session with us, we found some really cute local spots to do our shoot. Then, Shannon will pass out custom cards with her photos to friends in her class (pictures coming soon!!) and in turn we will give Shannon a free Senior Session. The Art of a Barista

I am, but a cup of coffee. A simple pleasure enjoyed by many - addicts, workaholics, entrepreneurs, and procrastinators; however, the old will enjoy me with their dessert and breakfast, and the young will thirst after me till have come of age. For a barista, I am a completely different story. I am not longer the means to an end (books, meetings, the day... etc.), but I am the end and the mean. I am not just the black and foam found within 10% biodegradable cup, I start before that. If you were to meet me from the beginning, I come in a 100% recyclable bag of coffee beans. Before I am ground, my beans are oily, fresh and the aroma of rich flavor makes your tired eyes perk up. I am then poured into a coffee grinder that finely grinds me and other hundreds of other coffee beans into what appears to be brown dust - the finer the grind the bolder the taste. Today I am being ground into espresso, for a caramel macchiato. Yummy. I am tightly smashed into the handle, so that all my flavor and aroma can stay intact as water rushes over me. As the water pours through the handle I begin to leak through as well, but now I am coming out black with a light caramel finish. That’s how you know my existence, as a bean was fresh by the caramel-light foam that rests on top of black espresso. Inside my cup, before I am poured, is a vanilla syrup and a thick layer of caramel; however, before I am poured inside milk must be steamed. Steaming milk is harder than it appears. Every type of milk (either soy, 2% or otherwise) steams differently. So one must be careful. Steaming milk not only raises the temperature, but also brings all the flavor up to the top in a foamy-like existence. After the milk is carefully steamed and poured into the cup, I am the last thing to go. I am a delicate process that gets people through their finals, that interview, the headache, or a long night. I am, but a cup of coffee.

Memorial Day

We had the opportunity to do some event photos for Congressman Adam Schiff on Memorial Day. While one of the great enjoyments of the American culture is the three day weekend, I was thankful to be working these events last weekend. It was not only a great learning experience in a whole new field of photography, we were able to participate in two city events which so beautifully reminded me of what this country has been founded on and what has been sacrificed to maintain. May we never cease to pay tribute to and remember those who have defended the freedom we so often take for granted.

There is a price for everything,
nothing is easy, nothing free.
To be left without wanting,
then you must pay the cost.

With little price paid
and your appreciation lean,
value slips away to fade.
The desired becomes ignored.

If you yearn, if necessity be,

A introspective post is in the works about this past year. About two sisters who are so very different but in some ways very much alike. One of the ways that we are alike is that we are hard working and always up for a challenge.

Along the way - we've met and pursued relationship with several talented creatives. Some we've known since almost birth, others we've known from times past and renewed our friendship, and still others are new friends with whom we are building ties. We've discovered that by being open to opportunity, no matter how small - you may open doors to even greater opportunity.

Honesty, hard work, and a commitment to learn, these are things we value and are striving to meet others of a like mind.

This weekend we are co-hosting an event to help us continue chasing this crazy dream. It's one half meet new creatives and grow our working relationships. And it's one half meet brides and grooms to be, while introducing them to a pool of local talent.

I know that when I was planning my big day, I didn't attend any bridal shows or expos. I knew that I wouldn't be able to afford any of their services so why even go?

This is not that event. I cannot speak for all the vendors in attendance, but I will not be overbearing, overpricing or have a stuffy table. :) I will proudly show you my new album which is beautiful and expensive. I will share my candy. I will hand you a business card. And I will invite to enjoy your day at our intimate mixer. Hopefully this event will be a fun easy going party in the midst of a fast paced hectic L.A. season of your life.

Enjoy all the pieces of the planning. It will fly by all on it's own.

Shannon's mom gave her this session as her birthday present, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHANNON! :) She wanted a session with her and Nami, her rescued pup. I mentioned before that I thought everyone should bring their BFF to their session, and that includes four footed furry friends! We took her and Nami to this local spot that has a great fence & lots of trees. We had her bring Nami's favorite treats and toys, and she was a great sport. Shannon is one of those girls who is not only beautiful on the outside, but the inside as well. I love her smile and good natured spirit!

We did Hannah's portraits at the beach and one of my most favorite places, down town Culver City. A few years ago they started working on the area and now it is full of cute little shops, restaurants and portrait opportunities.

If Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum were two cute, smart & hilarious young women, they would be Hannah and Laura. Hannah asked that Laura come along to get some photos of her and her BFF. I'm now convinced that every portrait session should have a BFF included, so much fun!

Tracy asked to do her photos with her family at the beach because she wanted to get out of the studio & do some more fun portraits. Family portraits should not only be a time where you get to capture your loved ones together in the same place at the same time (this seems to get harder as your kids get older!) but can be an opportunity to spend some quality time together! Cornett Family Portraits

I knew going into it, that doing the Cornett's family portrait session was going to be not only fun, but also a great learning experience! How could it be anything but when you have 6 kids and two infants! Here are a few of our favorites from their session in December.

Important things to consider when booking your portrait session with little ones:
- Book your session around your children's schedule; when are they most alert, the most charming?
- If you want those adorable newborn basket shots, it's best to book your session for the first two weeks after they are born. If you book with your deposit, we will be flexible because we know some babies like to keep mom and dad guessing on their exact arrival!
- If you have a large group, get those group shots right in the beginning, when the kids are most smiley and aren't completely fed up the strangers who keep asking them to "Smile!" :D
- If you have an newborn, we expect the session to take awhile. Patience is key to capturing those beautiful baby photographs.
- Bring bribery items, it's ok just this once ;)

I enjoy a good love story, especially one that starts at In-N-Out! Can you really pair two better things in the world?? Well, throw in the beach and you've won my heart completely. Ashley and James met at In-N-Out when they both worked there, and it blossomed into James popping the big question. They got married a few months ago, and James' mom gave them this session as a going away present because they are now stationed in Wyoming. Wishing them the best as they start this new adventure as newlyweds!

Why Laurel Isle Photography?

Names are pretty important. In history, times of old, a name was given to determine a life. To declare a purpose.
Your name defined you.

When choosing the name for our new business venture, we wanted something that was not only not already taken, but spoke of who we are. How do you define two intense, driven, passionate, creative and completely different sisters? It is not an easy task. :)

Laurel (Lor-al) is the word that Lauren comes from. It means one who is victorious. The winners in ancient Greece were given a crown of Laurel leaves to wear upon their head.

Isle (Eye-ll) is part of the definition of Lindsay, which is Peaceful isle. I always envisioned a tropical beach, with a gentle palm sending shade down waves lapping gently at the shore. aaaaah....

And that is where our name comes from. A little piece of the two of us. Very different yet completely intertwined just as sisters were meant to be.

I love family portraits.

One of the things I've learned in the past few years is that you never know how long you will have your family. It's a lesson many have to learn too soon, too young. For me family photos are a way of remembering and treasuring those you no longer have next to you. It doesn't bring them home, but it can warm the empty spot left behind.

I also love how they capture the passing of time and the change in seasons. Marriage, birth, graduation, all meant to take place in the context of family. From tiny fingers and toes to flowers and rings, family is intermingled in it all.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting the Cornett & Coyne families. Aren't these little boys just edible! Thank you Krista for the fun shoot and many referrals! :) You can check out Krista's handmade jewelry site.

We had our first engagement session of the 2010 wedding season a few weeks back, and if it's any indication of the year to come - this 2010 is going to be FUN! :D

Lindsay and I mostly tried to stay out of the way as these two brought the creativity and energy to our shoot! And can you believe that this was in November? California fall is a dream come true for couples who want their photos at the beach.

Have you ever tried to capture a fire fly? It dances around the darkness, tempting you to grasp it. It's light gleams brightly in contrast and there is a burning sensation to chase after it. This kind of the way love feels like. It burns it brightest when exposed to the dark, and somewhere deep inside you yearn to hold it in the palms of your hands. Like fire flies, there is something magical and awe-inspiring about love that very few can ignore.

The Barbosa Wedding was that same sort of something magical and awe-inspiring that everyone hopes for. On a beautiful fall afternoon in the heart of Los Angeles and surrounded by loved ones, Robert and Annette made their commitment to each other.
